For just a moment, think about the physical recovery period after trauma.
What gets people through physical recovery? Physical rehabilitation demands a
lot from its patients and clients.
What actually gets these patients through this difficult time is the help they
receive, but that is only part of the answer. Just as important as the skilled
help are the courage, strength and determination of the survivors and their
families.
We call this the Willpower Attitude.
Willpower helps us in many situations. Physical, mental and even emotionally
laden situations can sometimes be helped by a dose of Willpower.
As physical recovery changes into psychological recovery (to feelings, thinking
and behaviour), a new Attitude is needed.
People get stuck in psychological recovery if the only attitude they practice
is Willpower.
This new Attitude is called Willingness – the
Willingness to stay strong, to stay courageous but to add openness to how you
approach life.
Benefit If you have been feeling stuck – as
if you keep hitting your head up against the wall – but don't know what
to do, this new Attitude will help. It will teach you that it is not
necessarily what you do but how you do it that is important.
Willingness is a door opener. It opens us up inside to new possibilities and to
new learning.
